Last week, A.I.–generated nude images of pop superstar Taylor Swift were produced and distributed without her consent. They circulated throughout the internet, with one single post on X (née Twitter) garnering 45 million views before the site took it down. Deepfakes, as they've come to be called in recent years, often target female celebrities, but with the rise of A.I., it's easier than ever for everyday people (almost always women) to be targeted. Last year, more than 143,000 deepfake porn videos were created, according to one estimate from the independent researcher Genevieve Oh, more than every other previous year combined. That number will, in all likelihood, only continue to rise.

Next month ChatGPT will celebrate its first birthday – marking a year in which the chatbot, for many, turned AI from a futuristic concept to a daily reality. Its universal accessibility has led to a host of concerns, from job losses to disinformation to plagiarism. Over the same period, tens of millions of users have been investigating what the platform can do to make their lives just a little bit easier. Upon its release, users quickly embraced ChatGPT's potential for silliness, asking it to play 20 questions or write its own songs. As its first anniversary approaches, people are using it for a huge range of tasks.

It is just me or Hugging Face is changing the game for Machine Learning? Their pretrained ML model library is beyond anything I have seen so far: https://lnkd.in/eB-4JkVF. Currently, there are 70,000 pretrained models available! I recently implemented a text summarizer using one of their models for the app I am building, and I was impressed by the simplicity of the implementation and the efficiency of the resulting product! I have been knowing HuggingFace for quite a while now, but I am late to the game realizing what they had to offer!

The goal of this research is to enable robots to learn new things from everyday people. For years, the AI and Robotics community has sought to enable robots to efficiently learn new skills from a knowledgeable human trainer, and prior work has focused on several important technical problems. This vast amount of research in the field of robot Learning by Demonstration has by and large only been evaluated with expert humans, typically the system's designer. Thus, neglecting a key point that this interaction takes place within a social structure that can guide and constrain the learning problem.

I was interested in robots from an early age – I remember a particular book printed in the 80s I read as a kid that showed a bunch of fanciful images of what robots would be like. I also loved movies like Forbidden Planet and the original Lost in Space that showed robots as these helpful devices. I also understood from reading about robots like Dante 1 (a volcano explorer) and the robots we sent to Chernobyl and 3 Mile Island how important these devices were for tasks hazardous to people.

Despite efforts to tackle corruption around the world, progress is still frustratingly slow, according to the latest report from Transparency International. Its annual Corruption Perception index reveals some alarming trends. It shows public service corruption is still a huge problem for two-thirds of the world's economies. The report uses a scale of zero to 100 to rank countries: zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. New Zealand comes out on top but with a score of 89.
